The JPEG images that you have taken from your Nikon camera usually contain a thumbnail at the start of the file. When a lower image resolution is required, software like Windows Explorer displays the thumbnail. But you said that the photos were broken, it means that the recovery tool that you used has corrupted the JPEG images while recovering it.
I don’t recall the software for recovering the deleted images from the memory card, but if you get online, you can find hundreds of good Flash Pretec Recovery software to choose from. First try out the trial versions first. If the photos are recovered and are not corrupted, then download the full version; suppose you still might have to recover photos in the future.
